3 Tips for Heating Your Home on a Budget

3 Tips for Heating Your Home on a BudgetEvery year, it seems, the winters are getting colder. In the North Eastern U.S., snow falls are hitting record highs while temperatures are hitting record lows. Last winter, from Maryland to Maine, there was a long stretch of time where temperatures were below freezing every day.

This can be a real kick in your bank account. Especially if you like your home warm and comfortable.

The cost of electricity and oil have continued to rise while the winters get colder. Sometimes it feels like there's no relief.

But, you can keep your home warm and comfortable with out breaking your budget.
How?

1. Use Your Thermostat Wisely

Do you leave the house to work for long stretches of time? Do you like to come home to a very warm house?
If so, your thermostat, properly used, can help. Newer thermostats often come with timers so that you can keep your home cooler than normal to cut down on energy use. So, if you like your house set to 70 degrees, you can lower it to 65 while you are at work.
Then, set the timer to warm the house up to 70 about an hour before you are set to come home. This drastically cuts energy costs! Rather than keep your home at 70+ for 8 hours are more while you are not home, you can keep it reasonably warm and get it up to your desired temperature just before you get back.

2. Don't Heat Rooms You Don't Use

Have a spare bed room, office, or storage room you rarely use?
Shut the vents and let it get cold. Or, set the thermostat much lower in that room (keep it well above freezing to avoid freezing any pipes under that room). This not only cuts down on usage, but it also helps your heating system more effectively warm the rooms you do use.

3. Use Space Heaters

There are now safe, energy efficient space heaters that can be used to cut down on your energy use. If you have a big living room or kitchen and want to avoid using your ducts to heat the room alone, use a space heater where you are to keep yourself extra warm.

This works well in living rooms, dens and bed rooms. The new style space heaters have settings that will allow them to shut off when they hit the desired heat levels.

Combine these three tips and save big this winter.
