Adirondack Waterfront Property Includes Many Historic Homes

By Jennifer Bell

There are many beautiful spots located throughout the United States. Each region of the country is different and filled with areas steeped in history and waiting to be discovered by the next generation. The Adirondacks is one such place. Every season has its own unique beauty and appeals to diverse individuals. Ever since the Victorians discovered it, the rich and famous have come here to enjoy the cool summers and the changing autumn foliage. Adirondack waterfront property is still desired by many for its beauty and history.

Once steamboats and railroads made travel to the area easier and more comfortable, New York high society began to flee the oppressive heat of summers in the city by spending their time at one of the opulent hotels and resorts that sprang up in this region. It became so attractive the wealthiest citizens built massive residences on Lake George which came to be known as Millionaires' Row.

Unlike their contemporaries who chose to build huge homes on tiny site in the Hamptons and Newport, Lake George residents bought plenty of land surrounding their cottages, as they called them. There are still great opportunities for the wealthy to purchase an estate, a home, or a building site in this exclusive area. When they do so, they will be in the company of a few palatial mansions that still exist.

Wikiosco is one of the luxurious homes built at the end of the nineteenth century, for example, that was recently for sale. It would take about thirteen million dollars to purchase this type of estate, but you would be getting a lot. This is one of the last private homes from the era that still exists intact. Like many of that period, it is a Tudor Revival. The mansion comes complete with a twelve car garage, twelve bathrooms, and a massive wine cellar. The views of Lake George are magnificent.

If you have four to eight million dollars at your disposal, you can well afford an impressive shore front home on Lake Placid. For these prices you can expect plenty of square footage, more than six bedrooms, and fireplaces all over the place. Boathouses are usually part of the package in this area. Heated pools and private tennis courts are also amenities available with many of these listings.

Some people prefer the amenity packages that usually come with town home living. These types of properties have been built in this area. Many times these are second or third homes for the buyers, so developers often include furnishings in the cost. You can buy a three story town home with a chef's kitchen, three or four bedrooms and baths for under a million dollars.

It is possible to purchase waterfront real estate in the Adirondacks without breaking the bank. You can find great smaller homes with two or three bedrooms, covered porches, and access to community docks for less than five hundred thousand dollars.

Every since the nineteenth century, people have flocked to the area. Whether you are just visiting or plan to become a home owner in the Adirondacks, you will never get tired of the majestic beauty of this place.
