Thermal insulating refers to the process of reducing heat transfer between objects that are in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence. Animals that are classified as being homeothermic also depend on air-trapping for warming their bodies.

A lot of energy is spent globally on maintaining interior temperature at acceptable levels. The maintenance of these temperatures follows the principle of air-trapping. When insulations are installed properly in buildings, they help to preserve energy, saving homeowners a lot of cash. Insulations also ensure temperature uniformity in spaces. Temperature gradient across the space is minimal.

Several kinds of thermal insulations installed in structures also reduce vibrations and noise. The noise and vibrations may be coming from the outside or within other rooms inside the building. This promotes comfort in the environment inside the building. In industries, energy is spent to maintain, raise, and lower temperature of objects. Such objects need to be insulated to reduce the amount of energy needed for these applications.

There are many factors that determine how effective a material can insulate heat. Some of these factors include thermal conductivity, surface emissivity, thickness, density, specific heat capacity, and thermal bridging. Different materials have different levels of the factors named above. The efficiency of a material to insulate against heat loss usually deteriorates over time due to aging and changes environmental conditions.

Different insulations cost differently. The best insulators usually cost very expensively. The installation of insulations needs to be done by a professional so that they can work properly. Poor installation can impede good results greatly.
