Virtual Reality Is The New Reality

By Steven Long

You observe someone standing in the middle of a room, his face obscured by a wraparound headset and his hands enclosed in data gloves. He seems to be looking everywhere at once and walking zombie like with his hands outstretched, as if touching something only he can see. To you, he may seem unhinged. But him, he has been completely transported to another dimension, in a world called virtual reality katy tx.

Virtual reality is as its name implies. In fact, these two words are so diametrically opposed that when used by themselves, they just cancel each other out. Virtual establishes the artificial nature of the experience, meaning it is all just contrived and purely existing in your mind. Reality has to do with the authentic sensations conveyed. The sight, the sound, and even the sensations fool your mind into thinking that whatever is implied is actually happening.

There are sets of equipment used to provide this experience. The headgears actuate a high visual experience and high definition digital surround sound. For the visually impaired, theres a lens insert feature so that maximal results are still a given. The head mounted display is accessorized with a head movement tracking sensor so that the panorama will adjust according to where you are looking. The data gloves transmit haptic or tactile sensations to your fingertips.

VR is on a different plane from movies, for example. For one, the extremely limited scope of the movie screen and the digital surround sound enables us to put things into perspective. For one, we wont have to worry that a particularly vindictive ghost will suddenly crawl out from our TV sets into our living room. The line between reality and artificiality is pretty much drawn in bold.

VR, on the other hand, is an altogether visceral and sensational undertaking. No matter how much you bank on your rationality and good judgment, you will still be completely drawn in the experience. The real and the artificial will be so closely entwined that you wont be able to tell where one begins and the other ends.

Because of this, VR is widely relied on for many uses and applications. For instance, it is used in psychotherapy to serve as a countermeasure to such conditions as phobias and posttraumatic stress disorders. People who are scared of heights, for example, are gradually inoculated by exposing them to their virtual fears. This is the moment to rationalize that the experience is only indirect so that the patient will calm down to a certain degree. Persons traumatized by a certain event may be made to relive the situation again. This was a very popular treatment for people who experienced trauma during the nine eleven attacks.

The most widespread use, evidently enough, is in entertainment. From battling aliens in outer space to embarking on a quest in a South American jungle, VR is the name of the game. There are also racing simulator games where you can buckle up in a Formula One racing car and speed on famous courses from around the world. You can play radar sports from golf, tennis, baseball, football, and pretty much anything you can think off.

VR has also already made its presence felt in the business world. It has revolutionized how companies sell their products. Architects, for example, have taken 3D plans and showrooms on a totally different level. There are other more significant uses as well, as for trainee pilots and trainee surgeons, who can now practice the technicalities of their job without having to worry about risks and consequences.

Virtual reality is the new reality. It proffers benefits galore. But it is also pretty much intuitive that, when not managed properly and responsibly, it can give more bane than boon.
