How To Know When Your Child Needs Help With College Admissions

By Elizabeth Powell

Having a child who is old enough to go to college is a nice thing. It is a man's desire that before he dies, his child is old enough to take up some responsibilities such as managing his companies, taking over some assets and getting married. It all starts with a post-elementary education and once that time reaches, finding help with college admissions becomes paramount. However, you would have to be sure that your child is actually ready for the next phase of the challenge.

Before your child gets to college age, you should have been able to train him in such a way that he can get used to any environment. This can be achieved by sending him to say in places other than your home. This can be in your distant brother's place or someone else related to you. This training is important to make his first year in school bearable.

You should also be confident that your child can stay independently. If he is not mature enough to decide appropriately on issues, it may not yet be his time to leave your care. Otherwise, he may rush into bad friends in a bid to find help in doing some of the things which he should have been able to handle alone. If you are not sure he can tell his right from his left, do not go about seeking help for admission.

Nevertheless, he should be past the age of bed wetting. Some people stop this much later than many others but your child won't find it funny in school if he wets his bed to the point that it affects others. They will call him names and this will make him feel bad. If it affects him too much, he will perform poorly in school.

Before bidding him farewell, be certain that he can undertake some tasks. For instance, he should be able to go to the market, sweep his environment, and wash the bathroom and toilet. At this age, nobody expects to see that he cannot perform all of these so you may want to save him from the embarrassments it will cause him by keeping him at home for one more year so that he can learn.

If your child wants to be an engineer or an accountant, you should be sure that he is good at mathematics. You may have to assess his performances before this stage and to see if he is good enough to handle college courses. His entrance examination should have been easy for him and there is no need to push further if he is not a reader of books.

You should also see that excitement in him that he is about to enter a new school despite the fact that he is leaving home. This is even a major motivation for most parents. To be properly guided on each step to take, ask your child for the phone numbers of his friends so that you can contact their parents.

You would not want to miss the opportunity if your child is going on a scholarship. Maybe there is someone sponsoring his education throughout college and he is expecting that your child gains admission in the next academic session if the scholarship must stand. In such a case, you have to do everything possible to make this happen.
