Protecting Your Equipment With Surfboard Socks

By Angela Perry

People who love surfing know how important it is to protect their equipment. Leaving your board out in the hot sun and on a sandy beach can do some damage over time. Transporting it can cause more severe damage. Using surfboard socks and other bags to protect it will keep it in good shape and keep it from getting dinged or damaged. Those that travel to various beaches to have fun know the dangers in taking it on an airplane.

The different types available offer different levels of protection. The socks are the most basic. Bags are the next step up and the coffins are the largest and most protective. Their prices differ, so picking the right one for your needs is an important part of the decision. Each one can also be customized with your brand or logo to match the board.

The basic style is the sock. The fabric is made to be similar in shape to the board. The end may have a drawstring to close it off once you have it wrapped up. This will protect it from the elements such as the sand and direct sunlight, but it will not keep it cool if it sits in the sun for long periods. This could be a problem of melting the wax. They're great for storing and transporting the boards to local beaches. They can also be folded and put in a bag while they're not in use. They are usually washable as well.

The next step up is the bag. This is the first one that has padding to keep the dings and damage from happening. They'll also keep the board cool if it is sitting in the sun on the beach or on top of your vehicle. The reason this is important is that the wax may melt and cause a mess if it doesn't stay cool. The very least suggestion is to have both the sock and the bag.

The third type is the coffin. It's called this because it is pretty big and can hold several boards. These are great for traveling on airplanes because they have thick padding. They'll keep several boards protected from dings and damage. It will also keep the boards cool so the wax doesn't melt off. They all come with a strap and handles to carry the larger bag over your shoulder as you traverse the airport looking for your terminal.

If you want, you can design your own bags. Some may want to make them fit the shape of the board, others will only be interested in the colors and designs matching their brand. Whatever custom ideas you can come up with, the manufacturer can usually help out. Having your brand on your bag allows you to express yourself even when you're not surfing.

DIY type of socks isn't as hard as you think. Using Lycra is the best choice because it has a bit of stretch and can form fit the board. Cotton is often used, but since it doesn't stretch you want to be sure you make it big enough and put a drawstring on the open end so it won't slip off the board.

It is super important to protect your equipment when you are a surfer. If you're going to the local beach, a sock will provide a basic level of protection. For more intense traveling or if you want to keep the wax from melting, you should get a bag for a single board or a coffin for multiple sets. Those traveling should definitely have the larger ones to keep the board from damage on the plane.
